Ride Sun Valley will Host First Backcountry Bike Races in Sun Valley
The U.S. Forest Service gives go-ahead to Mountain Sports International to offer two premier bike races June 27-28
The 5th Annual Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival presented by Subaru of Twin Falls will host an array of bike oriented events June 25-28. The first day of the SCOTT Enduro Cup presented by Vittoria and the new Shimano Boulder Mountain Fox Trot 50k cross-country mountain bike race will take place on U.S. Forest Service and National Recreation Area land both of which are within and outside of the Sun Valley ski area boundary located on Bald Mountain. Registration is open and filling quickly.
"We're really excited to expand our racing outside the resort permit area into this backcountry terrain and showcase some of the area's top trails, which haven't hosted races before," said Ride Sun Valley Event Director Seth Delorey.
According to Zach Poff, U.S. Forest Service Recreation Program Manager, this is the first time bike races have been allowed on these trails. Poff and Delorey of Mountain Sports International (MSI)-the event company that produces Enduro Cup and Ride Sun Valley-have worked diligently to offer racers a new experience and showcase the multitude of Sun Valley trails.
The first day of the two-day Enduro Cup on June 27, will start with two timed downhill stages on the U.S. Forest Service's Ketchum Ranger District, roughly 20 minutes north of town on Highway 75. The cross-country race on June 28 will kickoff in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, roughly 45 minutes north of town at the Galena Lodge. Specific course details will be released at a later date.
To secure a permit for this type of event, MSI had to rely on its reputation of holding successful races on public lands with Sun Valley, the Forest Service, and the BLM and have a very solid plan for protecting the trails. The MSI operations staff is working with the Wood River Bike Coalition to repair the trails post event. Prior to the races, MSI staff will go above and beyond to mark the course with additional directional arrows, course tape and other signage. By doing this, Delorey noted, athletes will be able to see their turns well in advance and regulate their breaking over longer distances to prevent skidding turns.
Delorey maintains the motto, "ride it, don't slide it" and asks athletes to be conscientious of this unique opportunity by treating the trails like their own. Poff reiterates, "Come enjoy the forest, use the forest, but respect the forest...leave it in good or better condition than you found it."
"This will be a positive economic driver for our community," Poff added, "which is definitely a great thing. If we can assist to offer a positive economic opportunity and still remain within our environmental standards-first and foremost-that's something we look at."
