Whistler, Canada - It’s been more than fifteen years since the first snowboard was cut in half and hardware mounted to the top to give dedicated backcountry snowboarders the ease of backcountry access that their skiing counterparts had long taken for granted. Since that time, there has been a steady increase in the number of splitboarders who have ridden lines that they only once dreamed of. Amongst this group are a growing number of female riders. To correctly identify the female backcountry riders Prior Snowboards is pleased to release the world’s first female specific splitboard, the Brandywine Split.

Prior Snowboards' Brandywine Splitboard

The Brandywine Split’s seeds were actually planted a decade ago. After the Backcountry Splitboard (BC Split) was released in 2001 Prior had customers coming requesting boards in smaller sizes; the majority of these riders were female. At that time Prior had been making women’s freeride boards for years and naturally designed the 149, 154 and 158cm sizes of the BC split around these designs. Key features included a narrower waist, additional sidecut and a slightly softer flex pattern to accommodate women’s physiques.

Throughout the last decade Prior has continued to refine the classic BC split ride and has always modeled any revisions to the smaller sizes around female riders. For winter 2010/11 this model has finally been given its own identity; the Brandywine Split is named after the Prior women’s freeride “Brandywine” model. The name Brandywine is derived from the Brandywine falls, river, valley and meadows - these are located just a few minutes from the Prior shop.

The Brandywine Split is designed to provide a smooth, fast ride in the complete gamut of winter conditions. Hybrid Rocker frees up the tip and tail resulting in an improved powder ride with more effortless edge to edge transition. Its classic freeride shape has a moderately long sidecut for maximum uphill efficiency and edgehold through varied conditions. Minimal taper provides extra power and drive off the tail to catapult you through turns with extra energy and speed.

As with other Prior boards the Brandywine Split is available in a variety of topsheet and base graphics and a one year warranty. It retails for C$1199 which includes the Voile mounting kit and skins, and can be ordered directly from the Prior website or from an authorized Prior dealer.

It looks like it predates this release, but here's a fun video from Prior:
